The Portland Loo Versus Other City Toilets

Portland Loo

The Portland Loo was designed in cooperation with the city of Portland to keep the city clean and discourage crime. Every feature was purposely designed to create a self-contained solution that makes it easy for the city to maintain. Other restrooms built for the end user have resulted in too much privacy which ultimately led to quick damage and illicit activity inside. The Portland Loo is the only public toilet designed and built specifically for the people that maintain it, offering any city an attractive and safe lavatory. Here are the many ways that the Portland Loo stands out against other public toilets:

Small Footprint

The Loo has a small overall footprint, allowing it to be located right on the street on sidewalks or other tight spots. It also can be solar powered which allows it to be put almost anywhere, as long as there’s water sanitation hookup. This isn’t feasible for most traditional restrooms, or even most smaller public toilets.

Virtually Indestructible

Made with heavy-gauge stainless steel wall panels that have a graffiti-proof coating, they are tag-proof, fireproof, sledgehammer-proof, bleach-proof and predicted to last up to 100 years. If for some crazy reason it does get damaged, the panels are easy to replace.

No Inside Sink

Unlike other restrooms, there’s no basin or running water inside. The hand-washing feature is on the exterior, which allows more people to use it in a quicker time period – up to 300 flushes per day, comparable to an airport restroom! This also deters any clothing or body cleansing, which can easily be done in other public restrooms with a sink inside.

Secure Louvre Design

The open grating at the bottom and top allows law enforcement and security personnel to observe how many people are inside, and yet the occupant still has complete privacy. This also allows for conversations or other sounds to be heard easily right outside.

Built to be Crime-Free

There are also purple lights, sometimes mistaken for a fancy feature but actually deter intravenous drug use, as the hue makes it difficult to find your veins. There’s also an exterior light that shines until someone enters. That’s when the outside light goes off and the inside light comes on, so everyone knows it’s occupied.

Proven Track Record

There have been several prototypes of the Portland Loo to test design issues, resulting in a toilet that has addressed many potential problems – and now comes with a warranty. The first Portland Loo was installed over 10 years ago, and it still looks almost brand new today!

Easy to Maintain and Repair

There’s a cabinet of cleaning supplies inside, which makes maintenance self-contained and easy. The restroom dimensions and parts are interchangeable if damaged or needing update. Plus the plumbing and building components are commonly used by cities so they’re easy to find or upgrade.

The Portland Loo’s design has also earned the city’s first patent! Thus, Portland gets a percent of the profit. With it’s high durability and low maintenance at a fraction of the cost of most current stand-alone city restroom models, it’s a great solution for any city or organization. WHY IS THE LOO BETTER THAN ‘AUTOMATED’ ALTERNATIVES?

Automated restrooms prioritize privacy but often compromise safety, durability, and comfort. The Portland Loo® is uniquely designed to balance user privacy with public safety, ensuring a clean, safe, and accommodating restroom experience. Its minimal design also lowers maintenance costs compared to more complex automated alternatives.

CAN THE LOO COME IN CUSTOM COLORS?

Yes, the Loo can be customized in a range of colors to match your city’s unique needs and aesthetic. The standard gray color includes anti-graffiti properties, allowing graffiti to be easily removed from the unit.

Discourages crime

The restroom was designed with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design by using high traffic areas and visibility to deter illegal activities and generate high usage rates.

HOW DOES THE LOO HELP REDUCE INAPPROPRIATE USE, SUCH AS PROSTITUTION OR DRUGS USE?

Angled louvers on the top and bottom of the restroom provide limited lines of sight for public officials to detect inappropriate use. Installing the Loo in areas designed with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles can enhance this feature’s effectiveness.

Anti-graffiti walls

Protected with an anti-graffiti powder-coat, the restroom can take a lot of abuse, and is easy to maintain with a cleaning hose and janitorial supplies stored in the mechanical closet.

HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT THE LOO TO LAST?

Constructed from highly durable stainless steel and designed to resist vandalism, the Loo is built to last for decades with proper maintenance.

Open safety-grating

These open grates provide excellent visibility, allowing for easy monitoring while maintaining user privacy.
