Removing Graffiti from The Portland Loo®

1. First, Use Soap or Sanitizer Cleaner

Start by applying a soap or sanitizer-based cleaner to the graffiti-covered surface. These cleaners are effective for tackling light to moderate graffiti, especially if it’s fresh or on non-porous surfaces. Apply the cleaner directly to the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the paint or marker. Afterward, scrub the surface gently using a soft brush or sponge to lift off the graffiti. Rinse the area with clean water to remove any remaining soap and dirt.

2. Use a Citrus-Based Cleaner for Harder-to-Remove Graffiti

If the graffiti proves more stubborn, reach for a citrus-based cleaner. These cleaners are often more powerful at dissolving tough graffiti stains, especially if they’re older or have soaked into porous surfaces like brick or concrete. Citrus cleaners contain natural solvents that break down oil-based paints, markers, and other materials without damaging the surface. Apply the cleaner generously and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes to penetrate the graffiti. Use a scrub brush or abrasive pad to scrub the surface, applying more cleaner as necessary to lift off the residue.

3. Neutralize Cleaners and Wash the Walls with a Hose and Sprayer

Once the graffiti is removed, it’s important to neutralize any residual cleaning agents to prevent surface damage or staining. After scrubbing, rinse the area thoroughly using a hose and sprayer, ensuring that all traces of cleaner are washed away. The pressure from the sprayer helps remove lingering particles of graffiti and cleaner. Be sure to rinse the surrounding area as well to avoid any runoff or streaking. After washing, let the walls air dry completely before inspecting them for any remaining traces of graffiti.

By following these steps, you’ll effectively remove graffiti while protecting the integrity of the surface and ensuring it looks clean and fresh again. Depending on the severity of the graffiti, you may need to repeat the process or use additional specialized graffiti removal products for tougher stains.
