Grand Rapids authority approved $121K for downtown restroom

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A public restroom could be installed in Grand Rapids’ Heartside neighborhood by next summer.

The Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority has approved a plan to spend up to $121,270 to purchase and install the restroom four blocks east of Van Andel Arena at the intersection of South Division Avenue and Weston Street SW.

Installing a public restroom in the area was one of the recommendations included in the Heartside Quality of Life study. The neighborhood is home several shelters and missions serving the city’s homeless population, and officials say public urination and defecation is a nuisance and public health problem.
